The method
What Are E-Max Veneers and Crowns?
E-Max restorations are all-ceramic crowns and veneers made in one piece, without a core, from a glass ceramic called lithium disilicate. The name comes from the most widely used brand of the material. With no metal or zirconia core, they transmit light in the way closest to natural enamel, which makes them one of the most natural-looking options for front teeth.
The material has two key advantages: light transmission and thinness. Natural teeth take light in through the surface and scatter it; E-Max mimics this behaviour, so the tooth seems lit from within. Because it can be made thin, less tooth usually needs to be removed than for zirconia, and in some cases it is applied as a veneer covering only the front surface.
E-Max is a durable ceramic, but its strength is below that of zirconia. It is therefore ideal for single crowns and veneers, while for long bridges and back teeth under very heavy chewing forces the dentist usually prefers zirconia. Using E-Max on the front teeth and zirconia on the back teeth in the same mouth is a common plan.
The process follows the same pattern as zirconia: preparation and impressions, temporaries, a try-in while the laboratory works, and final bonding. For patients from abroad it is usually completed in a single trip of 5–7 days.
Treatment is carried out at licensed partner dental clinics in Istanbul by a dentist. JSH does not perform treatment; it coordinates the journey planned by the dentist. Suitability and choice of material are the dentist’s decisions.
Shade and light
Transmits Light Like Natural Enamel
The shade is chosen from a shade guide in daylight, next to your own teeth. Because E-Max transmits so much light, the colour of the underlying tooth affects the result; on dark or root-treated teeth the dentist may suggest a more opaque ceramic shade or a different material.
The shape is planned together with the smile line and lip line. Edge transitions, tooth length and surface texture are checked at the try-in; because the ceramic is thin, the transition to neighbouring natural teeth is almost invisible.
Whether a full crown or a veneer is made depends on the tooth: a veneer if the problem is colour or shape on the front surface only, a full crown if the whole tooth is weak or heavily filled.
Shade selection cannot be undone; if you are considering whitening, it is done before the restorations.
Comparison
E-Max Crown or E-Max Veneer?
Both can be made from the same material; the difference is how much of the tooth is covered and how much is reduced.
E-Max Full Crown
- Covers every surface of the tooth
- Protects broken, heavily filled or weakened teeth
- Usually 1–1.5 mm of tooth is reduced
- Used on front teeth and single premolars
E-Max Veneer
- A thin ceramic shell covering only the front surface (usually 0.3–0.7 mm)
- Suitable for colour, minor shape problems and gaps
- Very little reduction; in some cases none at all
- Preferred on sound, decay-free front teeth; care needed if you clench or grind
Thin, Translucent, Natural
Lithium disilicate takes light in and scatters it just as natural enamel does. That is why E-Max is one of the ceramics that give the most natural result on front teeth.
Suitability
Who Is It for?
E-Max is considered for people with discoloured, broken, cracked, worn or misshapen front teeth who want the most natural passage of light, and for replacing old restorations. It is used frequently as part of a smile design.
Suitability is decided solely by the dentist. Active gum disease and untreated decay are addressed first; for heavy grinding or long bridges the dentist may recommend zirconia instead. No plan is made for treatment that is not suitable.
Planning
How Is the Trip Planned and How Long Is the Stay?
At the assessment, your intra-oral photos and, if available, your panoramic X-ray are sent to the dentist; the number of crowns or veneers, any additional work and the total time are decided from them. The plan and schedule are sent to you in writing before treatment.
A typical single-trip schedule is 5–7 days: day one, examination, smile analysis and shade selection; day two, preparation under local anaesthesia, impressions and temporaries; a try-in and adjustments while the laboratory works (usually 3–4 days); and on the last day, final bonding and a bite check.
E-Max is bonded to the tooth chemically with a special adhesive technique, which adds to the strength of the restoration. With good care the restorations usually last 10–15 years; their lifespan depends on hygiene, gum health and keeping grinding under control.
The process
How Does the Treatment Work?
From your first message to your follow-up, the journey runs through a single coordinator. The treatment week has five stages.
-
01
Assessment
Photos and X-ray are sent to the dentist; the plan is confirmed at the clinic with an examination, a smile analysis and shade selection.
-
02
Preparing the Teeth
Under local anaesthesia the tooth is reduced by the thickness of the crown or veneer; a digital or conventional impression is taken.
-
03
Temporaries
Temporary restorations that protect the teeth are fitted while the laboratory works; daily life continues straight away.
-
04
Try-in
The restorations are tried in the mouth for shade, shape and bite; any adjustments are sent to the laboratory. Nothing is bonded until you approve.
-
05
Adhesive Bonding and Check
The restorations are bonded with a special adhesive technique and the bite is balanced; aftercare instructions are given in writing. Follow-up continues remotely.
Where it takes place
At Partner Dental Clinics, Planned by Your Dentist
Treatment is carried out at licensed partner dental clinics in Istanbul by a dentist and, where needed, the relevant specialists (prosthodontics, periodontics, oral surgery). Suitability, choice of material and the treatment itself are the dentist’s decisions; JSH does not influence them, it organises everything around them.
Our job is the rest of the journey: choosing the clinic and dentist that fit your needs, sending your intra-oral photos and any X-rays to the dentist, fitting the appointments into your length of stay, transfers and accommodation, and remote check-ups after you return home.
We communicate in English, Turkish and Polish. Every step (appointment days, laboratory times, aftercare instructions) is sent to you in writing, and you stay in touch with the same coordinator after you are back home.
Preparation and aftercare
What to Do Before and After Treatment
This list is for guidance only; the written instructions your doctor gives you at the clinic take precedence. Your coordinator is available for any question.
Before the Procedure
- Gum inflammation, decay or a needed root canal are treated first; crowns and veneers are placed on healthy teeth and gums.
- If you take blood thinners and gum reshaping is planned, tell your dentist in advance.
- Send your panoramic X-ray and intra-oral photos with your assessment; the length of stay is planned from them.
- If you are considering whitening, have it done before the crowns; the shade is matched to the whitened teeth.
- Tell us if you clench or grind your teeth; the choice of material and a night guard are planned accordingly.
After the Procedure
- While temporaries are in place, avoid sticky and very hard food; if a temporary comes off, message your coordinator straight away.
- For the first 24 hours after final bonding, avoid hard, sticky and very hot or cold food.
- Brush twice a day and use floss or interdental brushes; keeping the gum edge around the restoration clean is what determines its lifespan.
- Do not bite hard objects with your front teeth and do not bite your nails; this matters even more with veneers.
- If you clench or grind, wear the night guard your dentist makes for you.
- Have a check-up and professional cleaning every six months; limit smoking and staining drinks.
Recovery
After the Treatment
Timings are given for guidance only; recovery varies from person to person and is followed up by your doctor.
-
First 24 Hours
Hard and sticky food is avoided while the bonding cement fully sets. Mild gum tenderness may follow once the anaesthetic wears off.
-
Week 1
You get used to biting and speaking with the new restorations; sensitivity to hot and cold begins to fade. Flossing continues as shown.
-
2–4 Weeks
Sensitivity usually disappears completely and the gums adapt to the restoration edges. If your bite feels uneven, tell the dentist; a small adjustment can be made.
-
3 Months
First check-up photos are taken; gum health and cleaning habits are reviewed.
-
6 Months
Check-up and professional cleaning; check-ups then continue every six months.
-
Years
With good care the restorations usually last 10–15 years. Their lifespan depends on hygiene, gum health and keeping grinding under control.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About E-Max
E-Max is a lithium disilicate glass ceramic with the highest light transmission and the most natural look on front teeth. Zirconia is stronger and is preferred for back teeth, bridges and grinders. Both can be used in the same mouth.
A veneer is a thin ceramic shell covering only the front surface and needs very little reduction. A full crown covers the whole tooth and protects weakened teeth. The dentist decides according to the condition of the tooth.
Yes; because it transmits light like natural enamel, it is one of the most natural-looking ceramics on front teeth. Shade and shape are checked with you at the try-in.
The teeth are prepared under local anaesthesia, so no pain is felt. Sensitivity to hot and cold for a few days afterwards is normal and settles by itself.
Usually 1–1.5 mm for a full crown and much less (sometimes none) for a veneer. The amount depends on the condition of the tooth and is explained to you in advance.
On single premolars, yes; on molars under heavy chewing forces and in bridges the dentist usually prefers zirconia.
The glass ceramic surface is smooth and is affected less by tea, coffee and smoking than natural teeth. Plaque build-up can still dull it, so regular cleaning is recommended.
Usually 10–15 years with good care, longer in some people. If you grind, a night guard directly affects lifespan.
Usually 2–3 appointments within a single trip of 5–7 days. If additional work is needed the time is longer; the plan is sent to you in advance.
Usually 5–7 days: examination and shade selection, preparation and temporaries, a try-in during the laboratory time, and final bonding on the last day. The schedule is built around your flights.
